Forest Management

Effective selection of forest lands and prudent management by professional foresters can significantly increase the rate of biological growth over that found in unmanaged, natural stands. Techniques such as the use of genetically improved seedlings, stocking control, herbaceous competition control and thinnings are just a few of the procedures available to the forester.

RMK Timberland Group’s experienced foresters hold degrees in forestry. Regional managers/foresters are responsible for acquiring, managing and ultimately selling timberland in their regions. Thus, they are constantly investigating state-of-the-art research in the forestry field that will help better manage the timber investment. This research includes growth and yield modeling, geographic information systems, and satellite/high altitude imagery.

Before making investments, our foresters conduct extensive research and on-site inspections to verify that prospective investments can deliver attractive per-acre yields and expected investment returns. They also research environmental considerations to ensure that land use will be fully in compliance with public policies and regulations and also fully compatible with your investment guidelines as well as our commitment to responsible stewardship of the lands we manage.

Once a timber stand comes under our stewardship, our foresters use advanced forest management, or silviculture, techniques to accelerate growth. For each property, a thoughtful forest management plan is developed and implemented. Prescribed burnings and placement of fire breaks help lower fire risk, while selective thinning improves growing conditions and captures some intermediate financial gains. After a harvest, the goal is to quickly regenerate a healthy, productive forest.
